Common Hand Injuries in the Workplace—What You Need to Know

Your hands are crucial to your daily work, whether you’re typing on a keyboard, operating machinery, or stocking shelves. Unfortunately, hand injuries are among the most common workplace injuries, affecting thousands of workers every year. At Waterbury Hospital’s Upper Extremity Clinic, our fellowship-trained orthopedic specialists are dedicated to helping Greater Waterbury employees recover from hand, wrist, and elbow injuries to get you back to living your life!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition that occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hands and fingers, particularly in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. This condition is often caused by repetitive motions such as typing, assembly line work, or prolonged use of vibrating tools. Treatment options range from non-operative forms, such as wrist splints and physical therapy, to corticosteroid injections, and in severe cases, Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve.

Trigger Finger
Trigger Finger is a painful condition that causes one or more fingers to lock or catch when bent. It is often the result of repetitive gripping tasks, such as using tools, writing, or operating machinery. The condition occurs when the tendon in the affected finger becomes inflamed and thickened, making it difficult for the finger to glide smoothly. Treatment options include rest, anti-inflammatory medications, such as steroid injections, and in some cases, a minor surgical procedure to release the tendon and restore movement.

Hand & Finger Fractures
Hand and finger fractures are common workplace injuries that can result from accidental falls, machinery accidents, or impact injuries from heavy objects. Symptoms of a fracture include swelling, bruising, deformity, and difficulty moving the affected finger or hand. Depending on the severity of the break, treatment may involve splinting, casting, or, in more complex cases, surgical intervention to realign and stabilize the bones for proper healing.

Tendon & Ligament Injuries
Tendon and ligament injuries in the hand can result in pain, weakness, and difficulty performing daily tasks. These injuries are often caused by overuse, sudden trauma, or repetitive stress from lifting and gripping. Common conditions include tendonitis and ligament sprains, which can make it difficult to grasp or hold objects. Treatment typically involves bracing, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgical tendon repair to restore strength and function.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition that causes pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, making it difficult to grasp objects or perform repetitive hand motions. It is commonly seen in assembly line workers, office professionals, and individuals who perform frequent wrist and hand movements. Treatment options include wrist splints, anti-inflammatory medication, corticosteroid injections, and, if conservative measures fail, surgery to release the affected tendons.

Lacerations & Nerve Damage
Lacerations and nerve damage are serious hand injuries that can occur due to sharp tools, broken glass, or machinery accidents. These injuries may cause bleeding, loss of sensation, weakness, or even permanent loss of function in the affected area. Immediate medical attention is necessary to assess the extent of the damage. Treatment may involve stitches, wound care, and, in cases of severe nerve injury, surgical nerve repair to restore sensation and movement.

How to Prevent Workplace Hand Injuries:

  • Use proper ergonomics when typing or using tools
  • Wear protective gloves suited for your job
  • Take regular breaks to reduce strain on your hand and wrists
  • Use correct lifting techniques to avoid unnecessary strain
